Who is the Cherokee Community of North Texas?
The Cherokee Community of North Texas (CCNT) is a community dedicated to promoting language, culture, history, and traditions of the Cherokee. We are a non-political, tax exempt, non-profit, Native American organization incorporated within the State of Texas, and recognized as an At-Large community by Cherokee Nation. CCNT is committed to building fellowship among local Cherokees and other tribes across North Texas from Lubbock in the west to Longview in the East to Denton in the North. Our members celebrate our love for the Cherokee people and Nation, our shared history, heritage, and our interest in the continuation of Cherokee traditions, culture, and language.
Originally chartered by Cherokee Nation in 2011, CCNT continues to be officially recognized as one of the “At-Large” Cherokee Communities and operates under Cherokee Nation oversight. CCNT is legally separate and distinct from Cherokee Nation and other At-Large groups, has its own By-Laws and Policies & Procedures and is responsible for its own financial obligations and program funding. While CCNT is not an extension / outpost of Cherokee Nation, it does serve to represent the interests and provide connections for its members with the Cherokee Nation.
CCNT membership is open to anyone of Cherokee Ancestry or anyone who appreciates / values Cherokee culture. Membership provides opportunities for service and learning for the Cherokee people in our community. Annual membership dues enable CCNT to host meaningful and relevant programs covering a wide range of topics from Genealogy, History, Spirituality, Language, and Financial Education. Dues paying members are invited to attend all events hosted by CCNT free of charge. For selected events open to non-members, they may be requested to pay a nominal activity fee to cover costs.
While CCNT members are not required to be citizens of the Cherokee Nation, only CCNT members who are 18+ and registered as a citizen in the Cherokee Nation are eligible to vote in CCNT elections. Additionally, registration as a Cherokee Nation citizen is required for selected CCNT programs (for example, Scholarships). Cherokee Nation Executive Order 2019-02-CTH requires that all At-Large Groups demonstrate that a minimum of 60% of their members are registered with the Cherokee Nation (i.e., are citizens of the Cherokee Nation). From time-to-time, CCNT may need to demonstrate evidence of compliance by providing member names & CN registration numbers.
CCNT Membership is different from citizenship within the Cherokee Nation. Claims of Cherokee Ancestry and / or membership in CCNT are different from meeting the specific requirements for Cherokee Nation citizenship. Qualification for Cherokee Nation registration requires documentation of a direct connection to an enrolled lineal ancestor who is listed on the “Dawes Roll'' Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes.
CCNT is tax-exempt under IRS Code Section 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law; membership dues are not.
Questions or interest in volunteering should be sent to [email protected] and a member of the CCNT Leadership Council will be in touch with you usually within 2 to 3 business days.
